November is Fall Prevention Month, a national campaign that encourages communities and organizations across Canada to raise awareness, share evidence-based information and take action to help prevent falls and fall-related injuries (Fall Prevention Month)
Here in Alberta, Finding Balance is a seniors’ fall prevention initiative developed by the Injury Prevention Centre at the University of Alberta. There 2026 campaign focuses on three practical ways to help prevent falls: move your body, improve your health and remove hazards.
MOVE YOUR BODY
Regular physical activity can help build strength, flexibility, stability and coordination. Finding Balance suggests activities such as walking, swimming and Tai Chi, and encourages gradually increasing physical activity over time.
IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH
Everyday health habits can also help reduce fall risk. Finding Balance recommends regularly reviewing medications with a healthcare provider or pharmacist, having your vision and hearing checked, staying socially connected, eating well and staying hydrated.
REMOVE HAZARDS
A few small changes around the home can make a difference. Keep floors and pathways clear, use handrails and good lighting on stairs, install grab bars in the bathroom and wear supportive, non-slip footwear.
Fall prevention isn’t about doing less. Staying active, looking after your health and making your surroundings safer can all help support independence and reduce the risk of falls.
